Developed in Italy, this dye-sublimation process allows high resolution computer generated images, printed on plastic film with UV stable inks, to be transferred into durable, weatherable powder coatings.
In plain talk, it is a creative finish or decorative “tattoo” placed on and saturated into aluminum or metal. Scientifically speaking, sublimation is the phase transition of a substance from a solid directly to a gas without going through a liquid phase occurring under specific temperature and pressure conditions.
HOW DYE SUBLIMATION WORKS
A basic explanation for the powder coating/dye-sublimation process is as follows, and compares the metal part or product to a human body. If metal is likened to bone and muscle, then the powder coating would be the skin. The human skin provides all of the properties of standard powder coating, i.e. abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, UV protection, all that you expect from powder coating. We “tattoo” the skin with a high-resolution computer generated image that is printed on a textile sheet of plastic or paper using UV stable dyes. The transferred image, like a real tattoo, is completely impregnated into the coating (skin) through all layers to the metal part (the bone and muscle). The film is removed and the remaining powder coating has the image permanently sublimated into it. Most designs are UV stable, but some are not recommended for outdoor use. Smooth, textured, matte, gloss, and antimicrobial surface finishes are available.

TESTING OF DYE SUBLIMATION PROCESS
A rigorous sampling process ensures powder thicknesses of between 2 and 4 mils, which provides optimal transfer of dyes into a base powder. Using a precision Decoral curing system, we program and closely monitor the temperature of the sublimation process for complete transfer of images and patterns to metal.
